Alopecia can have several causes and in most cases the cause will determine the treatment. In most case, both male and female, the cause is hereditary i.e. if your father or mother suffered from hair loss you may well do so too. I f you suspect another cause I suggest that you consult your doctor, especially as he or she is likely to refer you to a dermatologist with a long waiting list, which may mean that your condition worsens somewhat in the meantime.
Treatments available vary from surgical implants to simple shampoos. Results vary too. Some forms of alopecia, such as that after pregnancy, will right themselves without any help.
Oral treatments are widely available, some herbal, some not. Herbal remedies tend not to be controlled by Drug Administration because they are considered a food supplement. They have usually been around for a long time , without causing important and long term side effects.
Other items may require a prescription, because of possible side effects or interaction with other drugs, and because some are more suitable than others depending upon the cause and whether you are male or female. Such drugs are sometimes available without prescription if bought from another country, but this is not advisable.
There is no one treatment that will bring about regrowth in every case. Most work by interfering with DHT, the hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink and die. Some claim to work by improving the health of your hair, but this rather vague claim only refers to the hair you have still got.
Some treatments are disguises such as sprays that colour your scalp or attach keratin particles to your hair. And then we come into the area of wigs and toupees.
What to do
First find out the cause of your problem. Then decide how important this is to you. Many of the treatments available will need to be kept up if hair regrowth is to continue, and this can prove expensive in the long term.
Finally, be patient. Hair is very slow growing so results may take many months to be seen.
