Alopecia Areata Shampoo

Alopecia areata is an auto immune condition. That is the body fails to recognise the affected hair as being part of itself and attacks it as it would an invading bacteria. Antibodies are formed in some of the hair follicles. Hair loss may be in coin size patches or larger ones and can even affect the eye lashes. Many patients are referred to dermatologists, but because they are busy people there may be a long wait during which the condition may worsen. However the hair follicles will still be capable of regeneration even after a long period. The usual pattern of growth is that the areas of most recent loss will be those that respond first.

One form of treatment is by using Calasol shampoo. This is recommended for use twice a day. In the case of children you should let the company know the child’s age when ordering as some products may be more suitable than others for them. Hair on the nape of the neck and near the ears will generally  respond more slowly than on the top of the scalp. It is used together with Calasol oil which will relieve the associated inflammation. Calasol is also available as a gel, and , for thinning eyebrows, there is an ointment. It is recommended that you continue to use it for a few months after achieving full hair growth.
Another treatment is F.A.S.T. ( fortified amino acid scalp therapy). This will help the hair, when it does start to grow, to do so faster than normal. It does not however cause the hair to start growing.

For most people alopecia areata is self limiting i.e. the condition improves after a time. However , these shampoos may considerably shorten this waiting period.
