Alopecia Shampoos

There are a number of products on the market for the treatment of alopecia areata. Several are produced by the Calosol Company such as “W n’G” shampoo and Calosol Alo-Active Alopecia Shampoo. The manufacturers claim that their use will stimulate and revitalise dormant hair follicles. They go on to say that regular daily use will promote a healthy scalp, reduce future hair loss and promote natural hair growth. The company realises that  hair loss is not in itself life threatening, but acknowledges the psychological effects baldness can have on someone. They seem to believe that despite disruption to hair production by immune cells, given the right conditions, the hair follicles are capable of regeneration.

The web site moondragon.org makes a number of recommendations. It says that you should not use shampoos that contain chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulphate, ammonium laureth sulphate or cocamide DEA as these can cause drying of both scalp and hair. Instead it suggests using products made form olive oil or corn and flax. It suggests that you do not use hair dryers, crimpers etc which can cause damage to the remaining hair. They say shampooing should be limited to two or three times a week and that the hair should be dabbed dry with a very absorbent towel rather than blow dried. It recommends several brands of shampoo – Original Shampoo from Shikai and Pure Shampoo from Doctor Hauschka.

Another site recommends Thymuskin Shampoo which it claims will result in a definite decrease in hair loss in the average user after a few weeks. The product was developed in Germany and has undergone clinical examination over a 15 year period. The site claims that it is the most thoroughly researched hair growth product available and brings about an increase in hair growth in by far the majority of cases in both males and females and is particularly effective in female pattern baldness.
