Baldness Male Pattern

Male pattern baldness, other wise known as androgenetic alopecia, is the kind most of us are familiar with and is the commonest form of the condition, covering about 95% of baldness in men. It is caused by genetic factors i.e if your father or grandfather loss this hair then you are more likely to do the same.

Hair usually lasts about 5 years before being shed. In this condition these hairs are not replaced and gradually bald patches appear. The speed at which this happens varies considerably and the age at which you first began to notice excessive loss does not necessarily determine the age at which you will eventually define yourself as being bald. This usually occurs first at the temples and on the top of the head.

It is caused by the effect of DHT, a hormone converted from testosterone by an enzyme called 5-Alpha Reductase. It both slows down hair production and produces shorter, weaker hair.
Treatments available are usually concerned with preventing the action of DHT . This can be in the form of tablets, oils, gels or shampoos of which there are many on the market. Some contain herbal ingredients such as saw palmetto and others, such as Minoxidil, do not. You need to read details carefully before committing yourself to a course of treatment. Some can be expensive in the long term and there may be possible side effects or interactions with other drugs. If in any doubt consult your doctor first. They will also be able to exclude any other possible cause such as thyroid problems. Those who take steroids as part of a body building programme may find that they have similar loss, and there are other drugs that can do the same.

Whatever form of treatment you choose remember that hair grows very slowly so it may be some months before you see results. Also not every treatment works for everyone, but there is hope out there.
