Finasteride Side Effects

Finesteride is a drug used, under various names such as Propecia, to pause  hair loss and to promote new growth. It does this by inhibiting 5 Alpha Reductase a protein which can cause hair follicles to shrink. The drug has  positive effects in many cases. However some people find that there are problems. 1 or 2 % of men who use Finesteride experience some diminishment in their sexual ability – this included a decrease in the amount of semen produced, difficulty in achieving and maintaining an erection and a loss of sexual desire. These sort of effects begin soon after beginning a course of treatment and will disappear if the drugs are discontinued according to some doctors. However  some men find that despite stopping the drug their sexual performance is still affected, even years later. However it must be said here that as hair loss is often associated with ageing , what they report may in some cases be part of the normal ageing process. On the other hand 10% report an increased sex drive. A very few, 1% , report enlargement of the breast area.

In a recent study of 18,000 men aged 18 to 41 some were given Finesteride and others  placebos. Most of the men who took Finesteride showed some hair growth in the first year which was maintained in the second year. In those taking placebos the decrease in hair continued.

Finesteride is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for use in male pattern baldness along with Minoxidil , which is sold under the name Rogaine, but other drugs such as RegenePlex, are also approved, and are not known to have  same side effects.
