Male Pattern Baldness Treatment

Male pattern baldness is by far the commonest type and though it is physically harmless in some cases can cause some loss of self esteem.  There are a number of treatments available. They range from simple shampoos, to drugs and even surgery. Some  methods are aiming to revitalise the hair follicles so that they continue to produce a number of hairs. Other methods include inserting plugs of hair taken from the more fertile areas around the base of the hairline.

Drug treatments such as Propecia and Minoxidil do produce hair. However there is the possibility of side effects and they must be taken continuously as their effect is not otherwise maintained.

There are 4 basis methods other than surgery that can be used in an attempt to increase hair production.

1. Use topical application such as special shampoos and gels in order to block the action of enzymes that cause loss.
   
2. Apply ingredients that irritate the follicles and so cause them to be more active.
   
3. Take internally drugs that block the production of the enzyme. One such is Saw Palmetto, an antiandrogenic herb which inhibits 5 –alpha-reductase activity. It will help both to slow hair loss and be beneficial in benign cases of prostate enlargement.
   
4. Take internally or apply materials that block the bodies immune response and so allow hair to grow. However the use of substances such as steroids can have multiple side effects. Any of these may be beneficial as far as the hair loss is concerned.
