Laser treatment attempts to stimulate hair regrowth on the scalp. There are two forms – Low Level Laser Treatment (LLLT) and Light Emitting Diode Treatment ( LEDT). The lights used are in the red or infra red range, so that they can penetrate to the blood vessels and pass through the haemoglobin. The red haemoglobin doesn’t absorb the red light so it is able to reach the tissues where it is needed. There are many published studies claiming wonderful results. Laser treatment may be useful in alopecia areata , where the hair comes out in patches as the result of an auto-immune response. There have been claims that the increased blood flow that results from laser treatment will mean increased hair growth.
