Hair loss in Pregnancy

Often the hormones of pregnancy will cause many hairs to change over from the resting stage to the growth stage of their cycle. This results in luxuriant growth. However in a few cases very dry hair may become even drier and break because of the action of the hormone progesterone. If it breaks off near the roots this may appear as hair loss. However it is best top check with your midwife or doctor in order to eliminate any other causes such as thyroid problems. This is especially important if you have a long term medical or dietary problem.

After pregnancy there will again be hormonal changes of course. And because so many hairs entered the growth phase at once they will of course enter the resting phase at the same time, so some months after a pregnancy you can expect more shedding than usual, but this will eventually right itself as hormonal levels return to normal.

Another thing that might happen is that you may have come off the pill in order to get pregnant and this may result in excessive loss. But again this will right itself over time.

During pregnancy hair may react differently to the norm when using dyes and perms so take care and do tests first, even with a product you have used before.

Questions have been asked about the danger to pregnant presented by their husbands using hair loss products such as Finasteride. It seems that there is no problem with semen, but pregnant women are advised not to handle hair loss products.

So, for most women, their hair will improve during pregnancy. So don’t worry and have a beautiful baby.
